On September 9, 1990, a query was submitted to Marilyn Vos Savant’s Parade Magazine column, “Ask Marilyn,” by a reader who had read the column.
Even though Vos Savant accurately solved the question, her response resonated with statisticians, mathematicians, and everyday problem-solvers worldwide. They didn’t believe her, no matter how many ways she tried to explain her answer to them, and she was frustrated. The problem is explained in greater detail in the video above, which also tells the story of one of the most egregious instances of mansplaining in the history of statistics.
