Vera Menchik

Vera Menchik was an overlooked woman in history who deserves much more recognition. Although she may not be a household name, Vera is the longest-reigning Women’s World Chess Champion ever. Vera held this title from 1927 to 1944, and despite various enemies, Vera remained champion for 17 years due to her highly strategic style of play. She won the title during a period when women chess players were largely ignored by society, which makes Vera’s success all the more inspiring. Vera’s legacy has been remembered as one of the best women chess players ever, and her success easily eclipsed any pre-existing gender barriers present at that time.
