Tessellations

Students put their knowledge of rigid motions to work in this project by examining and creating different patterns of shapes, including tessellations (patterns that fill the entire plane) and complex designs that exhibit rotational symmetry (the design is congruent to itself by several rotations).

Students use the language of transformations to describe and investigate such patterns, with a particular focus on patterns from Islamic art and architecture. Then, students create their own design and tessellation.
