In 1961, the first man–a Russian cosmonaut–entered space, and the United States had to do something better. It was a cold war, and NASA scientists were working hard to send an American astronaut to the moon. And we have this beautiful photo from those days. Life Magazine photojournalist J. R. Eyerman asked the scientists to fill the chalkboard with some fancy math and physics equations for this historical shot!
