Students will place bears on a beam to develop a sense of the mean as a balance point. They begin by guessing and checking. Then they’ll develop strategies for determining the balance point with more precision (e.g., by observing that the balance point is where the sum of the distances to the left of the mean is equal to the sum of the distances to the right of the mean.)
