When Marnie Was There

Joan G. Robinson

When Marnie Was There was first published in 1967, it was almost nominated for the Carnegie Medal. It is now being turned into a movie by Japanese animation giant Studio Ghibli.

Anna has foster parents because she doesn’t fit in anywhere and has no friends. She is always on the outside of things. Then she is sent to Norfolk to stay with Mr. and Mrs. Pegg, where she runs wild on the dunes and around the water. She feels like she knows the Marsh House, and soon after, she meets a strange little girl named Marnie, who becomes her first friend. Marnie disappears one day. The Lindsays, a new family, move into the Marsh House. Anna becomes close friends with the Lindsays after learning much about friendship from Marnie. She also finds out that Marnie is not what she seems to be.
